Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure, the Ford family was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a little girl, Catherine Ford struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder. She also experienced anxiety because of the word association. Ford began to be interested in acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized the school was not suitable for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place after her third try made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. Shaun Dingwall was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. The stage was her main focus as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her resume in the year 1996.
